Cold Frame Coloured

Triggered by an article I recently wrote about Fred Herzog and his use of colour in his splendid street photography in Vancouver, I revisited some of my own street work in Calgary, made on a cold winter day in March 2023. The temperature ranged from minus 10 °C to minus 18 °C. Light snow was falling, and there was a mist in the air.

I had been photographing along the Bow River and in Inglewood, a nicely preserved, vibrant community in the east of the city. Making my way back into downtown along Ninth Avenue, I visualised an interesting angle on the Calgary Tower, an icon of the cityscape that frequently features in the photos of both residents and visitors. The open blue door of a waste bin framed the tower and the Platform multi-story car park. I got down on my knees to shoot through the gap, and as I did, a walking, smoking man in a trilby hat and an orange shirt appeared in my line of sight. My cold frame burst into colour. Thank you for being there!

Below are a few of the other photographs I took that day. Thank you for reading.
