A four-photo series in a grid. Also known as a quadtych. Or call it a quadriptych or a tetraptych. Whatever you call it, it’s a four-way, fun way to capture what I saw, connected with and photographed over the past month. This short September series follows a journey from poem to film to the shores of two lakes of Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada.
The Odyssey
Christopher Nolan’s epic film of Homer’s narrative poem was released in cinemas on July 16, but it took us seven weeks to secure seats at the IMAX cinema in Calgary. It was worth the wait to see this fabulous, big-screen rendering of this archetypal journey home.
The Bridge
A day out, hiking with William in Kananaskis Country. He is on the bridge, which gets you over the waterfalls of Sarrail Creek without getting your feet wet. It has a solid metal construction, replacing its wooden predecessor that was washed away in the floods that hit Alberta in 2013.

Glacial Lake
In Britain, this would be called a tarn, a lake left behind after a glacier has melted. Located high above the southern shore of Upper Kananaskis Lake (in truth, a reservoir), the beautiful Rawson Lake gets its name from Dr. Donald Strathearn Rawson, a limnologist who earned his academic reputation from studying lake ecosystems in Canada.

Shores of the Soothing Tree
Camping out on the shores of Lower Kananaskis Lake let me get up and out early to see the mist rise off the water. You can’t hear the Common Loon, Gavia immer, but it was there, wailing in melancholy as I revisited the home of this splendidly soothing Balsam poplar.

Four photographs from September. Maybe I will do this again. Thank you for reading!
