The first snow of the season showed up on Thanksgiving Sunday. Just a dusting, less than a centimetre, but the temperature kept low, around freezing, and it stuck around all day. As people busied themselves, shopping for turkeys and cooking the birds, I went out in the flurries to one of my favourite local places, Griffith Woods. It’s a fabulous wetland and woodland area bordering the outskirts of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The Elbow River winds through, slowed by numerous beaver ponds. The trails can pull you out of urban life, but they bring you back easy enough when your boots get wet, and you are ready for a cup of tea.

Winter is coming. Here’s a poem for my Poetry in Motion series, my occasional series of poems accompanied by photos, inspired by moving along, be it by walking, running, biking or taking public transport.
FIRST SNOW
Familiar arboreal faces,
Growing white stubble.
A beaver’s lodge
Topped out like cake.
Pathways defined,
Leaves in decline
Packing things up
For winter break.
