All Dressed Up: Portraits of Cosplayers

This article is an excerpt from my new publication All Dressed Up: Portraits of Cosplayers. With 97 photographs, the book explores the character within characters; stories from people performing their own versions of other people they have a passion for.

Mad Moxxi

Laura Mackenzie, wearing an amazing, colourful costume was cosplaying Mad Moxxi from the original Borderlands. The video game is set on the planet Pandora and other places in the distant future.

“She’s seductive, promiscuous, she’s pretty badass”

I asked Laura why she had chosen Mad Moxxi? “I decided to do this character because she is pretty badass”, she said. “She likes to rule Pandora, she’s seductive, promiscuous, she’s pretty badass, so she kind of rocks it. She has a Thunderdome, she loves watching people fight and she puts on a pretty face while she does it.”

So, what is a Thunderdome, I asked? “It reminds me a lot about Mad Max…it’s a fight to the death and she gets her rocks ‘cos she loves it, she loves watching them, she runs the whole thing and she kills you if you don’t die (laughs), so I like strong women!”
