A quiet first period was almost done but for 30 seconds. Then Hannah Suto slashed, got pulled for two minutes, and Emily Biggin scored on the power play for Airdrie Lightning. Fire White equalized with three minutes to go in the second as Rachelle Plum found her way to get the puck past Jenna Thomson from close quarters.

Six minutes into the third, Chantelle Richard was called for holding and it was Fire White’s turn with the man advantage. Plum won the faceoff, passed to Alessandra Imperato who slid the puck across to Jennifer Nixon hovering on the blue line. Nixon traversed left to find an open lane and hit the puck low to score between Thomson’s right pad and post.

With thirty seconds remaining on the clock, Fire’s Avery Krawchuk was penalized for hooking. Lightning pulled Thomson from the goal to give the visitors a two-man advantage, but Fire White’s defence held tight.

Final score: Calgary Fire White 2-1 Airdrie Lightning

Song of the Match

DJ Dan was on a thoroughly tropical, Caribbean groove during the first break. Take your pick from three solid reggae tunes laid down by Bob Marley and the Wailers: Is This Love?Get Up Stand Up (The song gives its the name to a new London West End musical about Bob Marley’s life, coming out in 2021), and No Woman No Cry (the iconic live version performed at the Lyceum Theatre, London in 1975). And here is a bonus: Stir It Up performed at the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973. Classic!

Up next: With the game against St. Albert Sharks rescheduled and already played, Calgary Fire White has a bit of a break. Next game is against Southern Express at the Labor Club Ice Centre, Lethbridge on February 29, 2020.
