In a curious arrangement of fixtures, Calgary Fire White played Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs two times in two days to close out their encounters in the regular season of the Alberta Female Hockey League. Both results went in the favour of Fire White, giving the team a boost up the Midget Elite standings with just three more games to play.
Keirsen Kobi opened the scoring for Red Deer but three unanswered goals by Rebecca Alloway, Caolan Marks, and Marlee Oczkowski gave the home side the edge over the Chiefs at Bowness Sportsplex.
Final score: Calgary Fire White 3-1 Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs
Another Kobi, Sydney opened the scoring for the Chiefs in the Sunday afternoon game at East Calgary Twin Arenas. Rylee Pennoyer equalized for Fire White in the closing seconds of the first period. Paige Dodd regained the lead for the Chiefs two minutes into the second period then Fire came back again with a blue line shot from Alessandra Imperato.
Meghan Dean got the winning goal, three minutes into the third period, topping off a splendid three-point game and four-point weekend tally for the Fire veteran.
Final score: Calgary Fire White 3-2 Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs
Song of the weekend
Three stars go to Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders for a song that includes the lyric “Got brass in pocket, got bottle I’m gonna use it” signifying a confident woman with money (brass) and courage (bottle). Brass in Pocket, the first Number One of the 1980s decade in the UK continues to be a widely enjoyed girl power anthem. The music, unlike the video, doesn’t lose its touch in the passing of time.
Up next: Airdrie Lightning is the Fire White visitors at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday, February 15, 2020.
