Reversing the decision from November 1, Calgary Fire Red edged their Fire White sisters 3-2 in the second of their Alberta Female Hockey League encounters this season.
Chyenne Risling put stick on puck in a scramble in front of Madison Shenfield in the White net before the fans at Bowness Sportsplex had settled into their bench seats. Without some good Fire White defence, the Red team might have been up by two or three going into the first interval.
The restart took a while to sort out some communication issues: a phone call made from a dressing room. DJ Dale announced that 911 had erroneously been called. The police were at the rink entrance. Players skated off the ice; the phone was silenced. The referee allowed the puck drop without penalty, and normal service was resumed.
Fire Red’s opening to the second period was like a replay on Fire Red’s action in the first: a scramble in front of Kalynah Fong-Martin in the Red’s net; a loose puck, and Jennifer Nixon swooped down to tuck in past Turtle.
Four minutes later, Fire Red regained the lead with, wait for it, another goal scramble and another point in the bag for Risling. Alexa Brown tied the game up for Fire White with an honest, unassisted shot at 7:11. Convenient, that.
An entertaining final period was resolved just before closing when Fire Red defender, Katie Maloney hit a shot from the point past Shenfield’s glove hand.
Final score: Calgary Fire White 2-3 Calgary Fire Red
Up next: Fire White played Airdrie Lightning at East Calgary Twin Arenas on December 8. The report for that game is here.
Song of the Match
Anything by Blondie, I was thinking, since Chyenne got a couple of goals. Well, DJ Dale did play Breaking Glass. He might have chosen Call Me, or Hanging on the Telephone to fit in with the action off the ice as well. I’m going with another artist though and a song that he didn’t play. It’s such a cool number by Wyclef Jean, featuring the beautiful voice of Mary J. Blige: 911. Dial it up here!
