Fire shut out Cyclones

Fire Red Midget AA continued their winning streak with a five-goal shut out on Saturday over Lethbridge Cyclones. With three more points in the bag, the Calgary team now share the lead of the Alberta Northern Division with their Fire White sisters who have played two games more.

Fire Red went on the power play after six minutes of play. Jennifer Nixon passed hard across the blue line to her defensive partner, Olivia Sutton who hit a blaster through traffic generated by Jayna Barnden to out-guess the Cyclones goalie. Barnden was unable to capitalize on an open net but made sure after seventeen minutes with a looping shot that went up high and through the goalie’s mitt into the net.

The second period saw plenty of action with Barnden, Nixon, Kelly Stanford, and Skye Mathew all going close to getting it done but without troubling the scorekeeper. Eight minutes into the final period, Julia McEwen went into the left corner then hit a speculative shot towards the net that found its way between post and pads. Two minutes later, Ella Kitchen and Mathews both fired in shots. The puck lodged up against the right post and Isobel Pettem-Shand deftly nipped in to poke it home. With five minutes remaining, Stanford moved into the slot from the left boards and cracked in another shot to go top of the league standings with 30 points so far in the season.

Final score: Calgary Fire Red 5-0 Lethbridge Cyclones

Song of the match

I’m going with a female anthem from 1983. Remember the girl with the black mitts? Here’s Cyndi Lauper with Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
