Apart from a no goal, there were no goals in the first two periods; then three pucks struck the net in the third to give Fire Red a 2-1 win over Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs.
Kelly Stanford looked to have scored at the end of the second period after hitting the puck through screening offered by Jayna Barnden. But the on-ice decision was overturned after a lengthy consultation between the officials who determined that Red Deer goalie, Madison McLaren had lost her blocker in the play.
Julia McEwen got the first one to stick on the scoresheet after seven minutes when her shot hit the goalies pad and went over the line. Kelly Stanford made it two with just over four minutes to go pushing in the puck from a lovely pass across the net from Adria Lubert, Fire Red’s Player of the Game.
Red Deer pulled back a goal with 1:30 remaining on the clock. Goalie McLaren was pulled, then Fire Red got penalized-twice-leaving their defence a torrid few moments of six on three play. The survival instinct kicked in and Fire kept Red Deer out to earn a rugged win.
Final score: Calgary Fire Red MAA 2-1 Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs
Song of the match
DJ Mikey MacE played a classic just as his daughter scored Fire Red’s first goal. Check this one from 1968 that you might have heard on the soundtrack of the 1998 movie There’s Something About Mary: The Foundations with Build Me Up Buttercup.
