Marty McFly would be impressed. Within eight minutes of the opening of the first period, Fire Red hover-skated around the Rocky Mountain Raiders and shot in four goals. There was no coming back to the future for the Okotoks team in this game.
Teah Workman opened the scoring after less than two minutes of play at the Ed Whalen Arena. Kelly Stanford, who assisted that goal was on the score sheet again two minutes later with her own goal, assisted by Olivia Sutton. The Rocky Raiders net minder, Elizabeth Campbell, went for a skate around to try and shrug off the shock but the Fire hit again half a minute later, a goal scored by Meghan Dean. Stanford’s assist made it a three-point game for her. Fire Red’s Player of the Game, Jayna Barnden put in goal number four before the turnaround with a nice shot from the left face-off circle.
Fire Red put away another two goals in the second period, scored by Hannah Suto and Siobhan Sullivan, before the Raiders got a break and opened their inventory. The Raiders pulled back another goal early into the final period to make it 6-2 but Olivia Sutton scored, giving her a three-point game, with eight minutes to go.
Final score: Calgary Fire Red MAA 7-2 Rocky Mountain Raiders
Song of the match
DJ Mikey MacE gets an honorable mention for playing Sheena is a Punk Rocker by The Ramones. But with a seven-to-two win, today’s song of the match goes to his closing-out choice, a classic tune from 1983 by David Byrne and Co: Talking Heads and Burning Down the House.
Up next: Calgary Fire Red MAA are on a road trip to Leduc next weekend where they will play three league games in two days at the Robinson Arena, Leduc Recreation Centre. On Saturday February 2 they play Edmonton Pandas and North Central Impact; then on Sunday, February 3, the Fire girls face off against Sherwood Park Fury.
