Two shootout saves by Fong-Martin
Like them or not, shootouts give results and that’s what was needed in the Alberta Female Hockey League Bantam Elite game on Saturday night at Bowness Sportsplex. Regular time plus five minutes of four on four left Calgary Fire White and The Rocky Mountain Raiders deadlocked at three apiece.
Brooklyn Leduc put the first shot over the line for the Raiders but Fire White goalie, Kalynah Fong-Martin saved the other two. At the other end, Fire White’s shooters, Mia Bierd and Hailey Wiltshire, both connected with their shots. It was enough to tip the balance in an otherwise close, well-contested game between the southern Alberta rivals.
No penalty advantage
Fire White’s power play was not its usual fired-up self this night. Given five opportunities with the man advantage, the Okotoks defense killed them off each time. After 20 minutes, the teams were drawn at 1-1 with goals from Sarah Gaiser (Calgary) and Kristin LeDuc (Okotoks). Two second period goals by Mia Bierd and Ella Kitchen gave the home team the lead going into the second interval then the Raiders came back in the third with two goals from Raquel Inoven and Genesse Williams.
Final score: Calgary Fire White 4-3 Rocky Mountain Raiders
Up next: It’s a family affair at Ernie Starr on Sunday, October 29, 2017: Calgary Fire White versus Fire Red.
