Five on three survivals
It was a fast and furious pace to start up the long-anticipated clash between Calgary Fire White and their family member team, Fire Red. The Reds survived two bouts of five on three in the first 20 minutes then got a breakaway that gave them the lead 14 minutes into period one, scored by Siobhan Sullivan.
Red and White even up in the second
Fire White had another five on three power play in the second period but didn’t connect. With a penalty to Sarah Gaiser for hooking, the advantage went the other way. A short-handed White attack got close with a shot from the blue line that hit off the post. Fire Red was penalized again with six minutes to go and this time White made it count with a goal scored by Gracie Gilkyson.
Sunday Shootout
Red killed another the penalty that spilled over into the third period. Three minutes in, Fire Red got a breakaway but were robbed by a great save by Fire White goalie, Ali Kieren. She worked another brilliant move between the posts just three minutes later when it looked so sure a goal that the Red forwards were beginning their celebration. But their joy was momentary. Kieren had snapped the puck off the line.
Regular time ended with the teams tied at one apiece. Five minutes of four on four saw some chances, most significantly a couple of shots from Fire White stopped with confident pad saves by the Red goalie, Cienna Kinghorn. The game went to a shootout and both goalies worked hard for their teams. Kieren made two saves but one shot by Faith Greenough went to her far right. Kinghorn saved all three shots to keep Red’s advantage and there was the difference between red and white.
Final score: Calgary Fire Red 2-1 Fire White.
Song of the match: Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc
Up next: Fire White are back up the QE 2 highway on Friday, Nov 3 to play against Olds Grizzlys.
