It was a tense and exciting week of minor hockey in Calgary this week. Coming into the final stages of the RCA Diagnostics/Mayfair Diagnostics City Championships unbeaten, the Trails West Wolves Midget 3 won their semi-final only to be told of a referee decision on the ice being overturned by Hockey Calgary the next day. The short overtime game had to be repeated three days later and the Wolves clinched it with a golden goal during some intense 2 on 2 hockey. If that was not drama enough, the Trails West side struggled at Max Bell Arena Sunday night against a better Glenlake Hawks team, going down 4:2 in the final. A second final was required since the two teams had now lost one game apiece.
On to Wednesday night and a large crowd of family, friends and fans gathered at Frank McCool Arena to enjoy a tough but well-played game. First period, no score. In to the second and the Wolves found the back of the net twice. First one was disallowed; the referee couldn’t see the puck go in under the goalies pads. Never mind for the Wolves; #10 Mitch put one in fair and square, assisted by #7 Chase. Things got tighter in the final period but the Wolves hung on to their lead and goalie #30 Liam got a shut-out. Final score 1:0.
