All Dressed Up: Portraits of Cosplayers

This article is an excerpt from my new publication All Dressed Up: Portraits of Cosplayers. With 97 photographs, the book explores the character within characters; stories from people performing their own versions of other people they have a passion for.

Kris Brehaut had been dancing non-stop with multiple guests for at least two hours before I got around to interview him. His music was coming from a beautiful 1979 first edition of the Sony Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player and Chuang-Xin KU-898 loudspeaker, strapped to his belt.

“He’s a bit of a renegade…he’s not really a hero, not really a villain. He has great taste in music. And a great fashion sense! The coat alone, I had to, I love it!”

The songs on his space-tape, Awesome Mix Vol. 1, were from the hugely popular soundtrack of the film Guardians of the Galaxy. “I’m cosplaying Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy, aka Peter Quill, played marvellously by Chris Pratt”, he explained. Why choose that character to dance along with, I asked? “Why Star-Lord? Well, I think because he’s a bit of a renegade. Everybody likes the bad boy, he’s not really a hero, not really a villain. He has great taste in music. And a great fashion sense! The coat alone, I had to, I love it!”

I asked Kris what was his favourite track from the film? “I’m going to have to go with Come and Get Your Love. (That one, by Redbone) is easily my favourite. That’s when you whip up the sign that says, ‘Tree Hugs’.”
