It was a white night on the Día de Muertos for the Calgary Fire Midget Elite teams. Fire White edged their Fire Red sisters 4-3 in the first of their Alberta Female Hockey League encounters this season.
Bex Alloway hit a point shot into the net for Fire White before two minutes of play on the Olympic ice surface at Father David Bauer Arena. After 18 minutes, Meghan Dean attacked down the right-wing and moved in towards the goal area. Her left-handed shot was saved by Kalynah Fong-Martin but the stranded Fire Red goalie could only look on as the puck, stuck in snow on the edge of the crease, was picked up by Rylee Pennoyer and tapped over the line.
Skye Mathew got a goal back for Fire Red after 18 minutes when she got away from the defence, deked Fire White’s goalie, Madison Shenfield, and tipped the puck over her glove.
Within 30 seconds of the restart, Fire Red equalized with a goal from Carys Ursell. Five minutes later, Erika Wenzel scored with a howitzer from the point to give Fire Red the lead. But things were evened up again a minute later when Pennoyer scored her second goal for Fire White.
Halfway through the second period, Fire White’s Halle Joerissen went down hard after a challenge for the puck. Clearly in pain, with an upper-body injury, she required EMS treatment before being stretchered off the ice. All players left the playing surface but were able to resume the game twenty minutes after the incident.
Fire Red’s Chyenne Risling was awarded a penalty shot after 14 minutes for what may have been interference in front of the net. Risling’s blocker-side shot was saved by Shenfield.
Almost five minutes into the final period, Rachelle Plum scored the winning goal for Fire White with a shot from the left face-off circle, beating Fong-Martin glove side.
Final score: Calgary Fire White 4-3 Calgary Fire Red
Up next: Fire White entertain Southern Express at Bowness Sportsplex on November 16.
