The plaza outside Calgary City Hall was packed out with protesters on Friday, September 20. Building on the series of strikes originally organized by Swedish school student Greta Thunberg when she skipped classes in 2018, this event mobilized millions of people in towns and cities around the world in what is probably the biggest ever demonstration and demand for action on climate change.
Climate action in Canada’s energy capital
The protest in Canada’s oil and gas capital attracted several hundred people, many of them school students, carrying banners and placards calling attention to the climate crisis. Adults participated as well, including an oil and gas worker kitted out in full safety gear.
Next week, the United Nations Climate Summit will be held in New York City. There has never been a hotter build up in this world-wide demand for political action on global warming.
