Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs took the second game of round two in the Alberta Female Hockey League provincial playoffs (Midget AA) on Saturday over Calgary Fire Red.
Just like in the first game, it was the Chiefs who opened the game’s scoring at Max Bell Arena. This time the goal came from their captain, Zoe Lorenz-Boser, who put in a hard shot past Rebecca Boswell’s outstretched glove.
Fire Red had to hang on until the second period to equalize when Kaitlyn Severson hit the puck through traffic to beat the Chiefs’ net minder, Madison McLaren.
After sixty minutes, the game was still even. Overtime, playing four-on-four didn’t settle things either so the game went to the shootout.
After sixty minutes, the game was still even. Overtime, playing four-on-four didn’t settle things either so the game went to the shootout. Pettem-Shand went first; her shot got pushed out with a left pad save by Chiefs goalie McLaren. Sarah Gette was up first for the Chiefs; her shot ringed off the left post. None of the next five shooters connected. Fire Red’s Bex Alloway was denied with a nice right pad save by McLaren. Emma Meraw tried to go five-hole but Boswell buckled in and saved that one. Kelly Stanford actually had the Chiefs goalie beaten only to see the puck bounce back out off the post. Lorenz-Boser couldn’t repeat her earlier performance for the Chiefs and hit wide of the net. And Fire Red’s Adria Lubert couldn’t get her attempted five-hole shot through McLaren’s pads. The eighth shooter, Sydney Jack, hit the pot with a stick-side success, maintaining the Chief’s running in the playoffs for another game.
Final score: Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs 2-1 Calgary Fire Red MAA (Shoot-out)
Up next: The third game of the Round Two playoffs series goes on Sunday, March 17 at Murray Copot Arena, Calgary.
