Calgary Fire Red Midget AA took the first game of round two in the Alberta provincial playoffs on Friday night over Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs.

The Chiefs were first to light up the scoreboard at Rose Kohn Arena in the first period when Robyn Wlad snapped a quick shot over the glove hand of Cassidy Brown. Three minutes later, Fire Red’s Jayna Barnden broke free with just the Chiefs goalie, Madison McLaren to beat but McLaren came way out of her crease to make a bold save.

Fire Red equalized three minutes into the second period when Kelly Stanford drove the puck in past McLarens left pad.

Adria Lubert scored a second when she took a sweet pass from Julia McEwen across the goal zone and beat McLaren over her blocker.

Into the third period and with just over five minutes to go, Hayley Hoogkamp tore through the defence with only Brown to beat. But the Fire goalie was too good, putting her left pad between puck and net. It was the save of the game, and the play of the game, sealing the victory for FireRed, who picked up an empty-net goal, scored by Stanford, in the final minute of the game.

Final score: Calgary Fire Red MAA 3-1 Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs

Up next: The second game of the playoffs round two series is on Saturday, March 16 at Max Bell Arena, Calgary.
