It was the coldest of Calgary’s winter days, so far, this year. Earlier on the day when Iggy’s (Jerome Iginla) number twelve would be raised to the rafters at the Saddledome in honour of his splendid service to Flames hockey, on and off the ice, the mercury plunged down to -31°C. It was the Chiefs though who did the cheering in Red Deer with a solid performance and a win over top of the division Calgary Fire Red.
The home side started the scoring at the Clansmen Community Arenas with a goal from their captain, Zoe Lorenz-Boser, beating Fire goalie Rebecca Boswell glove-side. Fire evened it up before the interval when Skye Mathews’ shot found its way underneath Madison McLaren’s pads.
The second period was a bagatelle battle bearing five goals. The first one came from Fire Red, scored with the man advantage with a shot flung in deep and over the goalie’s glove by Isobel Pettem-Shand. Rachel Wood equalized for the Chiefs at the halfway mark when she found her way past Boswell’s blocker and right pad. Red Deer regained the lead with six minutes to go when Paige Dodd got up close to the net and tucked one away from Boswell’s glove. The Fire got their equalizer when Olivia Sutton laid back a pass for Adria Lubert to score. But the exuberant celebration was shut down abruptly after the faceoff when Taya McKersie shot hard and high over Boswell’s glove to score what would be the game-winning goal.
Fire Red had their chances with a power play in the final period, but nothing materialized. Red Deer reinforced their lead with just over six minutes to go, a goal scored by Haylee Couts.
Final score: Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs 5-3 Calgary Fire Red MAA
Song of the match
The video for today’s winning song, played just after Fire Red scored their second equalizing goal is a peach if you like your musicians dressed in Peaky Blinders hats combined with knitted Fair Isle sleeveless jerseys made popular by Monty Pythons Gumby’s. And if that’s not sartorially elegant enough for you? Well, there’s the tacky terrace interior décor (try matching anything in that front living room) and you can jump up and down to the two-tone, ska-based vibes of the Camden Town Nutty Boys to cheer you up. Drum roll: here’s Madness with their hit from 1982: Our House.
Up next: Calgary Fire Red MAA are back in Calgary for their final league game of the season against Airdrie Lightning at Ed Whalen Arena, Southland Leisure Centre on Sunday, March 3, 2019 (13:45).
