Smarter drivers head west

Day One (June 11, 2012): The start from Halifax, Nova Scotia

The morning was spent preparing the challenge vehicle, a 2012 VW Passat. This included a series of safety checks, like checking tyre pressure and wheel fittings. The fuel tank was dropped out so that the existing fuel could be emptied completely. It seems a bit labour intensive, and yes, it took a while, but this is all about ensuring we know the volume of the tank and how much fuel we can put in. Oil was changed out for Shell products and then the car was pushed (remember-no gas!) around to the neighbouring Shell Station. Big thanks to the local RCMP for helping with traffic.

At the forecourt, we filled up with Shell Bronze, then sealed up the tank -all under the scrutiny of a RCMP Officer. Paper work was completed, then off we went, out towards Halifax airport, then on towards the provincial border with New Brunswick. First leg of our epic Smarter Driver Challenge ended tonight in Fredericton- a relatively short journey of 438km.

Picks from the Smarter Driver Playlist: A close call on two songs so I am including both: Start me up by The Rolling Stones and Let’s get it started by Black Eyed Peas.

Tomorrows Stage: Fredericton to Ottawa (about 1009 km)
