It was a game that kept Andrea the scorekeeper busy writing: for penalties, that is. With 13 infractions split 7/6 between Calgary Fire White and Rocky Mountain Raiders, this was somewhat of a stop-start game in the Alberta Female Hockey League (Bantam Elite) that struggled to get going for a while. It took 35 minutes of play before the first puck was struck into the net. But it was a good one: a hard shot from Sara Gaiser from the left side hash marks, surprising the Raiders goalie, Falyn Thomson as it sailed over her right shoulder.
The Fire White capitalized on just one of their six power plays with a second goal in the final period at Stew Hendry Arena, Calgary. Asha Hanson took a pass across the blue line from her defense partner, Gracie Gilkyson and slapped the puck hard into the net.
Final score: Calgary Fire White 2-0 Rocky Mountain Raiders
Up next: Road trip! The Fire White head up north to Edmonton to face off against Edmonton Pandas on Sunday, December 17, at Bill Hunter Arena (11:45am). No bamboo snacks on the bus, please.
Song of the match
DJ Dave played I Fought the Law by The Clash several times to accompany the parade into the penalty box but you already know about that one. I was set to pick Eminem’s Lose Yourself that comes with the hockey-type lyric: You only get one shot, do not miss your chance … This clip is from the film 8 Mile.
My top pick of the match though is, wait for it, a country song, because the Fire Girls love singing this one on the bus and, if you look closely swing their sticks to it when they are on the bench: Fishing in the Dark by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
