The temperature plunged from double digits to just a few degrees and cold enough to snow as the first round game of the Can West playoffs got underway at Lincoln Park, the home of Mount Royal University rugby. Facing their Springbok-like rivals, the University of Alberta (the resemblance is based on their green and gold jerseys), the game showed points just from the boot in the first half as the Edmonton-based university team took the lead, 6-0 from two penalties in front of the posts.
Too many offside offences handling errors in the rucks and a few dropped balls prevented MRU from getting onto the score sheet. Meanwhile, U of A got on with things nicely and put in three tries in the second half to give them a well-deserved win 20-0 and a berth in the final of the playoffs.
