The Okotoks Oilers needed to pull back a win in Black Diamond after their defeat the previous evening in the first round of the Calgary bantam hockey playoffs. It wasn’t to be. The Calgary Girls Hockey White Hawks found a rich seam in the last minute of the second period to pull back a lead taken by Okotoks eight minutes into the game.
First came a power play goal for a can opener tripping, scored by #20 Nicole Orubor. With no time to catch a breath, the Hawks were flying, literally, as Carolyn Berze took off from the ice, Bobby Orr-style to push the puck into the net. Then, with just six seconds remaining, #16 Maddy Noonan scored again to make it 3:1 Calgary.
In the third period, the Hawks consolidated and scored two more, a second by centre, Maddy Noonan and a blaster from the blue line by defenseman, Katie Maloney. Final score 5:1 sees the Hawks moving on to the second round of the Calgary City Championships.
