Cosplayers at Calgary Expo

The variety of Cosplayers that come out for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (Calgary Expo) is colossal! Comic book heroes like DC Comics superhero Batman and Marvel’s  X-Men are commonly encountered. Whole families get into role-playing too at this multi-planetary, friendly event.

Soul Eater

Meet some of the characters from the Japanese manga series, Soul Eater. Holly is playing Maka Albarn (above), while her partner, Jonathan is another monochrome-styled character, Death the Kid. In brighter red and yellow clothing, including some fabulously designed sneakers, is their son, Edison as Soul Eater Evans.

Japanese Manga

Soul Eater is written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo and has appeared in print and as video games released by Nintendo and PlayStation. The storyline is based around three teams, each of which has a weapon meister and a weapon that can transform into a humanoid. These get used by Shinigami, the headmaster at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, to collect souls. He has to get 99 evil humans and one witch. Failure means they have to start the collection again.

The English language version of the manga (graphic novels created in Japan) is serialized by the New York-based publisher, Yen Press in the Yen Plus magazine, which covers a range of Japanese manga stories. Manga takes its artistic styling from some of the earliest of Japanese Art dating back several centuries.
