A kiss in New York City

The Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra painted O Beijo (The Kiss) on a wall located on 25th Street at 10th Avenue in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan. It is based on the iconic photograph made by Alfred Eisenstaedt of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on VJ Day (surrender of the Japanese in the Second World War) on August 15, 1945. It has become a potent symbol of love surpassing war and inspiration for couples like the one depicted here.

One sunny Sunday morning in November 2014, I was walking with my family and photographing street art along the magnificent High Line, a public park and footpath created from a disused railway line. The couple asked me to take their photograph with Kobra’s street painting in the background. I gladly obliged and made this romantic juxtaposition.
