Lethbridge, February 17, 2019

With a win in Lethbridge, Calgary Fire Red went top of the southern division of the Alberta Female Hockey League (Elite Midget AA) on Sunday. In their final meeting of the season, the visitors blanked the Cyclones, 4-0 once more in the Minster of Puck, aka Adams Ice Centre.

The first period was without goals, the main attraction coming from a magnificent full-ice performance by Teah Workman. She back-checked to defend along the boards, stripped the puck from a Cyclones forward then turned and sped up the ice to shoot hard across the face of the goal, missing the net by inches.

In the second period, Isobel Pettem-Shand conjured up a slinky puck move through her own feet to get past her marker, Emily Jourdin, but Piper Sleaziest made a fine stop, just one of her 46 saves during the afternoon matinee. The scoreboard finally lit up after seventeen minutes. Julia McEwen skated in from the left boards, stranding defender MacKenzie Leroux and let the stick rip with the puck going over Slezak’s glove hand and just inside the post.

Fire Red scored three times in quick succession in the final period. Kelly Stanford made a breakaway down the middle of the ice, hit the crossbar with her shot and then jumped with glee as she saw the puck bounce down and over the line. Without drawing breath, the Fire hit the net again seconds later, this one scored by Siobhan Sullivan. Meghan Dean finished things off with a power-play goal, also in off the crossbar less than two minutes later.

Final score: Lethbridge Cyclones 0-4 Calgary Fire Red
